*Urologist Robert Pugach, MD treated patients for over 10 years with HIFU before he underwent HIFU himself.

Prostate cancer is a very common disease – about 1 in 9 men with be diagnosed in his lifetime. The good news is that it is also very treatable, especially if diagnosed early. Unfortunately, many traditional treatments for prostate cancer have a high risk of unwanted side effects which leave men with lifelong problems like loss of sexual function and urinary incontinence.

However, a non-invasive treatment called HIFU is now available for men with localized prostate cancer: HIFU, which stands for High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, is as effective as surgery or radiation in eliminating cancer with lower risk of side effects.

HIFU uses ultrasound energy to heat and destroy specifically targeted areas of tissues. HIFU is a one-time, outpatient treatment that takes 1-4 hours with no radiation or blood loss. There may be no greater endorsement of the treatment than the fact that urologists are choosing HIFU for themselves when they are faced with prostate cancer.

One of those urologists is Los Alamitos practitioner, Dr. Robert Pugach.

Dr. Pugach was diagnosed with prostate cancer late in 2016 and found himself faced with the same dilemma experienced by many of his patients. Dr. Pugach underwent a HIFU procedure by his friend and colleague, Dr. Michael Lazar in 2017.

“The procedure was simple and completely pain-free. IN fact, I was able to go out to dinner that evening with my wife, Dr. Lazar and several other colleagues,” said Pugach. Two years later, Dr. Pugach’s PSA is stable, and he has no evidence of cancer at all.

Dr. Pugach was an early-adopter of HIFU and now serves as one of several select proctors in the United States. As a proctor, he is responsible for training other urologists who are new to HIFU. He also speaks regularly about his experience as both a treating HIFU physician an a HIFU patient.

Dr. Pugach Practices urology at Pacific Coast Urology and has been treating patients with HIFU for over 13 years. He offers the HIFU procedure locally at Los Alamitos Surgery Center.
